IPhone 2,1-3rd Generation

Posted by Winterboarder On January - 29 - 2009

6 month guarantee - Match.com

Mounting evidence hints that a new version of the iPhone has been in the works for some time now. This evidence emerged this week that suggests Apple Inc. has been testing its next generation iPhone in the San Francisco Bay Area for the last few months.

The development adds weight to rumors that the Cupertino, Calif. computer maker is preparing a smaller, lower cost version of its iconic smartphone for consumers grappling with the long, drawn out recession.

An Apple spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The recent hubbub is over the discovery of the term “iPhone 2,1″ inside new iPhone software, and in data collected by Pinch Media Inc., an ad serving company used by iPhone software developers.

The numbers hold the clues. The first iPhone was identified in iPhone software as “iPhone 1,1″, while the next generation iPhone 3G went by the name “iPhone 1, 2.” If it sticks to this nomenclature, then “iPhone 2,1″ is the logical name for the brand new iPhone Apple’s rumored to be making now, said Pinch Media Chief Executive Greg Yardley.

The Apple news Web site MacRumors was the first to discover Apple’s new iPhone software describes an “iPhone 2,1″ model. In an interview Thursday, Pinch Media’s Yardley said data his company’s collected suggests Apple’s been running a small test of about 50 of these new iPhones in and around San Francisco since October.

“I don’t know what’s going on at Apple,” Yardley said. “But what we’re seeing though strongly indicates Apple’s doing some sort of new hardware testing.”

2.2.1 Firmware Warning

Posted by Winterboarder On January - 27 - 2009

Apple released today the 2.2.1 upgrade for the IPhone. If you have a jailbroken IPhone or ITouch do not upgrade yet. Your device will become unjailbroken and cannot jailbrake it yet since Quickpwn is not up to date because this firmware wasn’t released in advance for developers.

Improvements:

* Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
* Significantly better battery life for most users
* Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
* Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
* Faster installation of 3rd party applications

* Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
* Improved performance in text messaging
* Faster loading and searching of contacts
* Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
* Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
* Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts

* Genius playlist creation
* The App Store
* Enterprise support
* MobileMe support
* Mass email move and delete
* Contacts search
* Updated keyboard and dictionary support
* Support for more email attachments
* Scientific calculator

Some of these improvements are long awaited however I cannot do withouth what Jailbraking has to offer. Cheers to Apple corporate mentality.  Just imagine Ford telling you that you can’t tint your windows and get bucket seats because the “Ford Look”  and SYNC are copyrighted.  Thanks “Bill Jobs” and “Steve Gates” for getting us here.

No More iPhone-optimized iGoogle

Posted by Winterboarder On January - 23 - 2009

Google has silently pulled the plug on its iGoogle website designed specifically for the iPhone, now unceremoniously redirecting traffic to its standard mobile version of the web portal instead.

Until now, those who visited Google from an iPhone or iPod were treated to a version of iGoogle portal made just for the enormously popular Apple device. But without so much as a warning, the special treatment has come to an end.

The only scrap we could scavenge about the decision comes from a Google support forum, where a Google employee tries to calm a swarm of infuriated users.

“We decided to direct iPhone users to the standard mobile iGoogle Page. We’ve found that people hit iGoogle from lots of different phones — we want to ensure you’ll all see the same version,” he writes. “Most or all of your existing content should translate over to the standard mobile version. The only exception would be any gadgets that aren’t compatible with most mobile browsers.”

Which isn’t terrible useful for extracting useful information, so we’ll idly speculate: Perhaps it’s a simple matter of leveling the playing field with Google’s Android making tracks in the mobile arena. Then again, Google still makes plenty of iPhone-specific apps, like Google Earth.

It could also simply be that not enough folks were using iGoogle on the iPhone to justify the expense of running a separate website.

Or maybe a little from column A and B. Who knows? Google works in mysterious ways

Out Now Yellowsn0w 0.9.6 beta

Posted by Winterboarder On January - 6 - 2009

The new Yellowsn0w 0.9.6 beta has been released. Yey

Please report your errors to the following link so they can make it better for all.

http://report.yellowsn0w.com/submit.php

Below is a copy of their blog entry:

Please note the following:

BASICS

The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, modmi and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.
The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).
You can add the application using the sources outlined below. There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.
yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.
DETAILS

There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs 60 seconds (with v0.9.1) after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix. Update: version 0.9.4 fixes this for many (but probably not all) users who previously had to wait a minute and then replug the sim.
For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.
After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.
RANDOM

The application is version 0.9.5 This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.
The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.
Direct linking to the repository URLs is prohibited, please only link to this post. We will be checking referers.
Happy 2009 and enjoy!
The iPhone 3G is used all over the world with all sorts of SIM cards, and we almost certainly will see untested and unexpected situations. If the soft unlock doesn’t work for you on day 1 (literally day 1, of 2009!) then please don’t panic or be impatient. This is new territory for everyone, so enjoy the ride as much as you can :)

RELEASE INFO

Cydia source:  http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com/
Installer repo: http://i.yellowsn0w.com/
UPDATES

Soon you’ll see yellowsn0w 0.9.1 in the repos. It uses a much longer delay to let your SIM card initialize. If you have problems with 0.9.0, try this one and wait a full minute after you see homescreen, then reinsert sim card. We need both success and failure reports to tune this across the world, so please be patient (but please also report result!) As of v 0.9.4 there’s no longer a one-minute delay step. If you don’t see your carrier when your homescreen comes up, you may still need a sim reinsert (for now).
If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. Also if you are good with the command line, you can make it much easier by adding the line -q right after the /usr/bin/yellowsn0w line in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.iphone-dev.yellowsn0w.plist (that’s and advanced tip, hopefully someone will make a boosprefs type of tool for it) The -q option is now deprecated in 0.9.4+ (it’s now always in quick mode, unless you use the -l option for long mode).
No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we’re still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.
The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.
For ankle-biters that are pointlessly reversing the application the source is here all open, but remember Jody, we are watching you.
Thanks for the kind words Stephen

Twitter Phishing Scam Alert

Posted by Winterboarder On January - 6 - 2009

Dell Home_Dell™ Home Laptop Specials. Limited time offers.

A phishing campaign targeting Twitter has morphed, according to researchers at Sophos. Phishers are now using accounts compromised in the initial campaign launched over the weekend to snare Twitter users lured by the promise of an iPhone.

Phishers are hooking more and more Twitter users in campaigns to steal their account data, according to security researchers.

The initial phishing attack reported over the weekend has expanded, with spammers now using compromised accounts to initiate a new campaign that capitalizes on the popularity of the Apple iPhone.

According to Sophos, the latest barrage of phishing e-mails contains messages like this: “hey. i won an iphone! come see how here.” Others read: “Wanna win the new iPhone? It’s so easy and cool, I love this thing! Visit: [url removed].”

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, speculated in a blog post that spammers are earning a commission via affiliate links by directing traffic to these Web sites.

“A compromised Twitter account can be abused just like a compromised botnet PC,” Cluley said in an interview with eWEEK. “It can be exploited by hackers to launch further spam campaigns, or to spread malware or to attempt identity theft.”

A warning about the initial campaign was posted Saturday on the Twitter blog. That attack worked by sending out e-mails that resembled notifications from Twitter about Direct Messages. According to Twitter, a typical e-mail in this attack reads: “hey! check out this funny blog about you …” and provides a link to a phony Twitter log-in page.

While the damage of losing Twitter credentials may seem minimal at first glance, as the recent campaign shows, the potential exists for the information to be used for social engineering purposes in a broad range of cyber-scams. In addition, Cluley pointed out that many people use the same password for every Web site they access.

“That means that if hackers now have your Twitter details, they can also perhaps log in to your Gmail, eBay, PayPal, Amazon, Hotmail and other online accounts and create a greater impact on your identity and wallet,” he said.

Twitter advises users to immediately reset their passwords if they have been victimized by the scheme.

A Disappointing Macworld 2009

Posted by Winterboarder On January - 6 - 2009

Great offers on Mini 9 & Mini 12 – now with additional savings at checkout!

Apple Inc said on Tuesday said it was dropping copy protection from songs sold on the Internet and debuted its slimmest 17-inch laptop yet, but with no dramatic products or master pitchman Steve Jobs, the company’s final Macworld performance disappointed Wall Street.

Apple shares slid 0.7 percent, lagging by far the Nasdaq’s 1.7 percent gain, reflecting frustration over the lack of news from the trade conference that had previously introduced the iPhone to the world.

“There were some innovative products, but no true blockbusters,” said Robert Francello, head of equity trading for Apex Capital hedge fund in San Francisco. “People were bullish going into it, and now they’re kind of taking money off off the table.”

Apple said its iTunes music store, which has sold 6 billion songs thus far, will offer its 10-million-song library free of digital rights management — or copy-protection — by the end of the quarter, for between 69 cents and $1.29 a song.

Songs will also be available straight to iPhones over the air, instead of through a computer.

The company decided not use Macworld to launch any major new product, as it had in past years, when it introduced such industry-changing devices as the iPhone.

In years past, the company’s Macworld product launches had produced so much buzz that they managed to overshadow events at the far larger Consumer Electronics Show. The 2009 CES show kicks off this week in Las Vegas.

Tuesday’s event produced few surprises. Apple announced a $2,799 17-inch laptop that is the company’s lightest and slimmest ever, as well as tweaks to software for home movies and photographs.

The event culminated with singer Tony Bennett crooning “The Best is Yet to Come” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” in a farewell of sorts to Apple, which will no longer attend the cultural event thronged annually by Mac-faithful.

Jobs, a fixture at past events, was nowhere in sight, despite some hopes for a cameo. Last month, the company said its chief executive and salesman extraordinaire would not deliver the Macworld address. That raised fresh concerns about the cancer survivor’s health and signaled to many Apple-watchers that the company had no plans to launch a major product at Macworld.

iTunes Store Changes Music Price Points

Posted by Winterboarder On January - 6 - 2009

Check out the newest coupons this week at Accessory Geeks

Apple today announced several changes to the iTunes Store (http://www.itunes.com). Beginning today, all four major music labels — Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music Group and EMI, along with thousands of independent labels, are now offering their music in iTunes Plus, Apple’s DRM-free format with higher- quality 256 kbps AAC encoding for audio quality virtually indistinguishable from the original recordings. iTunes customers can also choose to download their favorite songs from the world’s largest music catalog directly onto their iPhone(TM) 3G over their 3G network just as they do with Wi-Fi today, for the same price as downloading to their computer. And beginning in April, based on what the music labels charge Apple, songs on iTunes will be available at one of three price points: 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29, with most albums still priced at $9.99.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer our iTunes customers DRM-free iTunes Plus songs in high quality audio and our iPhone 3G customers the ability to download music from iTunes anytime, anywhere over their 3G network at the same price as downloading to your computer or via Wi-Fi,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “And in April, based on what the music labels charge Apple, songs on iTunes will be available at one of three price points — 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29 — with many more songs priced at 69 cents than $1.29.”

iTunes offers customers a simple, one-click option to easily upgrade their entire library of previously purchased songs to the higher quality DRM-free iTunes Plus format for just 30 cents per song or 30 percent of the album price. The iTunes Store will begin offering eight million of its 10 million songs in Apple’s DRM-free format, iTunes Plus, today with the remaining two million songs offered in iTunes Plus by the end of March.

iPhone 3G users can now preview and purchase the entire iTunes Store music catalog on their iPhone 3G over their 3G network, just as they do with Wi-Fi today, for the same price and in the same high quality format. Songs purchased on an iPhone will automatically sync to a user’s computer the next time they sync their iPhone.

The iTunes Store is the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 10 million songs, over 30,000 TV episodes and over 2,500 films including over 600 in stunning high definition video. With Apple’s legendary ease of use, pioneering features such as iTunes Movie Rentals, integrated podcasting support, the ability to turn previously purchased tracks into complete albums at a reduced price, and seamless integration with iPod(R) and iPhone, the iTunes Store is the best way for Mac(R) and PC users to legally discover, purchase and download music and video online.

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award- winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.
