FW 3.2 Kills iPhone Themes

Posted by Winterboarder On February - 21 - 2010

Yesterday, 9to5mac.com published an article featuring the new video call icons in firmware 3.2 SDK.  It’s a good useless feature to have on your device.

Assuming this SS is genuine, looking closer at this screen shot I quickly realized it’s the TelephonyUI.framework folder.  The icons in this folder are used for the lockscreen.  If you pay attention to the file names it looks like they might be dynamically generated and dated.  I’m not a developer nor a programmer, but to me this suggests that in firmware 3.2 themeing will be next to impossible.  If anyone can confirm this, please do so.  It would be a major blow to what jailbroken devices can do, also a really good reason into looking  for a new smart phone.  Let’s hope I’m wrong.

iPhone Cleared In S Korea

Posted by Winterboarder On November - 18 - 2009

South Korean regulatory body gave Apple a business license that would enable the company to offer the iPhone.

According to PCWord:
The license allows Apple to operate location-based services in the country itself and clears the last regulatory hurdle for the handset, said Oh Sang-jin, director of the privacy protection and ethics section of the Korea Communications Commission.

Earlier this year the regulator moved to allow Apple to apply for the license itself rather than obliging it to seek a local operator to run the location services and manage privacy issues concerning user data.

The regulator has said that the move was partly aimed to avoid limiting choices for users in a country where LG Electronics and Samsung, both local vendors, dominate the handset market.

South Korean carrier KT has said it is in talks with Apple about offering the iPhone. SK Telecom, another local carrier, is also reportedly in talks with Apple.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment on plans to launch the iPhone in South Korea.

New 3GS iPhones Jailbreak Proof?

Posted by Winterboarder On October - 14 - 2009

It has come to light through MuscleNerd from the iPhoneDev Team that the new iPhone 3GS units are being shipped with a new bootrom chip that is resistant to the 24kPwn exploit used in the jailbreak process.

Quote: MuscleNerd
“oh oh, from what @cpich3g + @Mathieulh have found so far, a normal untethered JB may be in jeopardy in brand new 3GS units”

This latest move on Apple”’’s part is to stop people from using their devices as they see fit and gain control over user experience.  I am not surprised that Apple has not taken a stronger legal venue to stop jailbreaking, because after all we are an endless source of ideas, new technologies and original content that they can easily steal since they pushed us near illegality.   We are used for their Quality Assurance and discover their major bugs and holes without being detrimental to our own devices nor being payed.  It”’’s nice to use people”’’s work for free and profit from it, after all we are the “bad guys” who aid bandits and terrorists.

Did anybody wonder how Copy and Paste feature came into being???  It came first to to us the jailbreak community, and I can bet that Apple didn””t pay a dime to the original author.  There is a lot more that Apple is stealing from us and claims it”’’s theirs.  It”’’s too profitable for them to just stop jailbreaking altogether. So the cat and mouse game continues, after all we gotta find the vulnerability in the new bootrom. Who else has the imagination and motivation to do it? I bet it”’’s not a underplayed and overworked employee.  So keep it up Apple !!! When you will win that will be the end of the iPhone era because by then all the other manufactures will learn what not to do and how to treat their clients.

AppDowner A BitTorrent App Store

Posted by Winterboarder On June - 26 - 2009

It look like AppDowner is back from the ashes of 2008.  Available in beta “soon”, AppDowner will be compatible with iPhone 3.0 devices, so what’s the deal?

“The concept of appDowner has changed slightly, from being a simple ’smart’ BitTorrent application to a full on App Store replacement,” explains Alec.

“No longer will you have to remember and type in the URL to your torrent file, simply click the “Store” tab on appDowner, and you’ll be brought to a beautiful interface designed by Miles (which isn’t quite ready to be shown off yet, but he assures us that it will be very, very soon!) which will allow you to search and find the apps you’re looking for.”

appdowner

Unlike the official App Store, there will no iTunes-like approval process to get your own applications onto the AppDowner store, with Alec promising that submissions to the system will be accepted within a week.

While BitTorrent is employed to serve apps to the user, the AppDowner torrent client can also be used for non-appDowner downloads also.

Now what nobody is asking themselves, is how is this AppDowner store going to manage to sqeeze into the market.  Knowing Apple stance on competitions, theres is no way in hell AppDowner is going to make it through the review process and on to the AppStore.

At the same time Cydia, Icy, and Cryptes installers are working on their own versions of an AppStore, so the door is closed there too, and almost forgot about Rock Your Phone which comes with it’’s ownjailbreak in order to use it.   Even if this AppDowner app is going to be perfect and deliver on what the developer promises, it’’s goint to take an act of god to make it to the market and be a hit with the users.

It sounds pessimistic, but it is going to be an uphill battle and I wish them all the best.

First Commercial iPhone GPS turn-by-turn Navigation App

Posted by Winterboarder On June - 2 - 2009

The first turn-by-turn iPhone application comes to us not from Apple, but from RipDev Team. It’s a hefty 58 megabyte package so I won’t be surprised if their servers will crash today due to the popularity of this release. The download is going very slow at the moment so I’ll do a comparison with xGPS App Later on. The note * Not scientifically proven. means that the app wasn’t tested with scientific GPS devices for accuracy, so don’t expect the same reliability as a Garmin.  If you need turn-by-turn directions to your local european watering hole iDA should suffice, considdering it’s a phone first and then a GPS device.

Easy Navigation

iDA offers full range of automatic navigation: address search, turn-by-turn guidance, voice and visual assistance on route. These features, combined with a simple to use interface provide maximum ease of use to the user, even when driving.

Below are some screen shots. I can’t get Navigation SS because I’m on another continent.

MacBook 13.1 On Swoopo

Maps

iDA includes a set of navigation maps made by one of the leading cartography companies — Tele Atlas, updated in Feb 2009. A significant feature of the supplied maps is full support of local addressing system (building-sub building) as well as real house contours on select maps.

Easy to Use Interface

The product features an easy to use interface that gets familiar even to novice users very fast, which is essential for a program you use daily on your trips.
Coverage

More expensive iDA Europe edition includes maps for all European countries, including Ukraine, Belarus, as well as other Eastern and Western Europe countries, plus Russian Federation (39 countries total).

Less expensive iДА Россия only includes the maps of Russia (more than 100 cities and 28 regions of Russia are supported, including 48 towns of Moscow Region and 43 of Leningrad Region).

Detours and Retours

Certain map contain inner routes for the buildings located far from main roads to assist you getting exactly where you need to get.

Pricing and License

iDA Europe sells for $109.99 and has a 7-day trial period allowing you unlimited use with no features removed to try the application. Each license entitles you for use of the application on one device, free 1.x upgrades and priority e-mail support during 1 year after the purchase.

iДА Россия goes for $59.99 and also has a 7-day trial period allowing you unlimited use with no features removed to try the application. Each license entitles you for use of the application on one device, free 1.x upgrades and priority e-mail support during 1 year after the purchase.

How To Install

From Icy or Cydia: Add a new source http://apt.ripdev.com and then install iDA Europe or iДА Россия from the Navigation category. Due to the large size of the package (totalling to 2 Gb for the Europe edition and about 160 Mb for the Russia one) we strongly recommend you to use InstallerApp or at least be connected to the high-speed Wi-Fi connection. Do not attempt to install this package over 3G or GPRS connection — this may ruin your karma*.

SBSettings 3.0 Confirmed

Posted by Winterboarder On May - 26 - 2009

As posted by BigBoss

SBSettings 3.0 is working well. I plan to release it soon since most the new features are also working on 2.0. I am not yet done but here is the current changelog:

* v3.0 DYLIB: Modified for all the changes required to work on 3.0 (with proper patched jailbreak, not working with public jailbreak on 3.0).
* DYLIB: Added status bar date. This will put the date in your statusbar right by your clock. This defaults off and you must enable it in the more app. See screenshot of statusbar with this enabled:

* DYLIB: Massively reworked SSH and EDGE toggles. Solved the low memory freeze ups previously seen when hitting refresh or trying to toggle EDGE or SSH. This was a major issue on current versions of SBSettings. It seems totally solved.
* DYLIB: Massively reworked WiFi toggle since it didn’t work on 3.0. It toggles very quickly now.
* DYLIB: Massively reworked phone toggle (airplane) since it didnt work on 3.0. Phone toggle is also instant.
* DYLIB: Added a single tap status bar to close the SBSettings window in 3.0 only. This is because home button brings up the search and there was some interference (enough that I felt annoyed). So you can swipe to open the window, tap to close.
* Both: Added ability to move toggle order around.
* More app: Added mobile substrate extensions manager. You can now troubleshoot a poorly performing device by disabling and enabling various installed mobile substrate extensions. (Requires respring after toggling).
* More app: Added numeric wifi, numeric GMS (phone) to extras menu. (Note: the 3.0 version of numeric battery looks different. Remember this is just enabled by SBSettings. It’s a feature of springboard).
* More app: Added statusbar date toggle button in extras menu to enable or disable statusbar date.
* Revved version to 3.0 since this version works with iPhone OS 3.0. It should work with 2.0-3.0.
* Reworked how root requiring toggles work. As such, we can now system out to processes as root. This enables Safari
download and other toggles! (Expect them soon).

Kryptes Installer App

Posted by Winterboarder On May - 7 - 2009

Coming as a surprise Kryptes Installer App made it’s way into the world of jailbreaking world. It comes via Sleepers.net repo who have been one of the first repositories for Cydia. The user interface looks like a combination between Cydia and Apple’s AppStore. Some of the graphics and icons need a little more attention IMHO, but I’m a graphics freak and most likely it’s good enough for the average user. I was impressed by the speed with which packages are installed and uninstalled. One thing that also caught my eye is that at the end of the package description there is a little note saying (Free), which tells me we are going to see paid apps in the near future.
Kryptes Installer App is also repository friendly so if you have one for Cydia you can submit yours straight from your iPhone. I just submitted mine and I’ll see what happens next.
The only bad thing I experienced with it is that it crashed my iPhone twice while trying to install themes, so it’s not as stable as Cydia. Good start though. Below there are a few screen shots.

InstallerApp 1.0 for Windows

Posted by Winterboarder On May - 5 - 2009

InstallerApp 1.0 for Windows has been released for download today. It seems to be a little bit buggy and a few kinks to be taken care of when it comes to Cydia repositories. The program seems to read the Homepage tag in the Control file, not Depiction, so the packages that don’t have this tag setup will not show any screenshots. Bummer
Overall is a cool new toy to play with if you got nothing better to do. It does pretty much what your iPhone does, on your PC desktop.

IAC Buys Urbanspoon

Posted by Winterboarder On April - 29 - 2009

Website operator IAC has acquired Urbanspoon, the iPhone App that provides online local restaurant guide. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Urbanspoon aggregates restaurant reviews across the web, from newspapers and professional food critics to bloggers and diners. The company claims that millions of iPhone users have downloaded an application that brings Urbanspoon content to users of Apple’s mobile phone.
IAC said that Urbanspoon will remain an independent brand, and will report to Jay Herratti who oversees the company’s Citysearch, InsiderPages and Evite brands.
IAC said that Urbanspoon rounds out a portfolio of local brands that include Citysearch, ServiceMagic, InsiderPages, and investments in OpenTable and MerchantCircle.
New York-based IAC operates around 35 internet businesses in 40 countries.
